deacon, permanent
   The Eastern Churches have traditionally had permanent deacons, men who serve lifelong as deacons without seeking ordination to the priesthood. Since the Second Vatican Council, married men have been ordained as permanent deacons in the Latin rite. (See CCC 1671)
